Organized crime groups across the UK were utilizing encrypted communication platforms, such as EncroChat, to coordinate illegal activities, including drug trafficking and violent crimes. The anonymity provided by these platforms made it challenging for individual police forces to infiltrate and dismantle these networks.
In 2020, the National Crime Agency (NCA), in collaboration with international law enforcement agencies, successfully infiltrated EncroChat, leading to Operation Venetic. This operation involved extensive cooperation among UK police forces and international partners, enabling the sharing of intelligence and coordination of simultaneous actions against organized crime groups.
Operation Venetic resulted in over 1,550 arrests in the UK, the seizure of £54 million in cash, 77 firearms, and significant quantities of drugs. The operation showcased the effectiveness of inter-agency collaboration and intelligence sharing in tackling complex criminal networks.
